I was just telling Costa about the lovely snails you sourced then. Similar ones are crawling all over the garden now, as we finally had some rain, after a terrible drought of more than eight months of not a drop… would love to taste the Andalucian version!
Thanks for your input dear friend! We lived in Patissia when I was growing up and the area was mostly gardens then. When we started going to Politia-Kifissia in the 70’ies our next door neighbor had sheep and made wonderful yogurt…
Cooked a capon yesterday and it was great! Much better than turkey which we never buy.
Aglaia, I can't believe there was a 'turkey shepherd' with his flock in Kifissia 50-60 years ago. There were certainly flocks of sheep in Maroussi when we moved there in 1972 (along with dirt roads and private houses -- all of which are gone now, replaced by apartment blocks :-( A wonderful image/memory. Thinking about Thanksgiving, a friend who we're celebrating with insists on turkey "since there are so many wonderful things you can do with the leftovers that are better than the actual roast bird." So I'll have to save the chicken with sour cherries, which sounds wonderful, for another special day.
love the turkey avgolemono idea, dearest Aglaia. And sour cherries rather than cranberries sounds perfect. btw: just sourced some live Irish snails - petis gris - and thought of your brilliant dinner at the Oxford Food Symp. Delicious in a peppercorn and fennel-seed broth with mint, as they like them in Andalucia!
You are SO KIND to include the photo of my book in your favorite ones... not in the list but it is fine!
Chicken and sour cherries sounds to me like a great alternative to turkey and cranberry sauce!
