I'm so sorry for your loss Costas. I only met Aglaia once, at the Oxford Symposium about 10 years ago, but I loved her food and the insights into your life together. I make her orange juice carrots all the time and have just put together a batch of mint oxymel, a summer favourite. I will raise a glass to her memory.
Costas - my thoughts and feelings have been with you these last weeks. The time I spent in Kea is a cherished memory that resurfaces often. Thank you. You’re both in my heart.
I’m so sorry to hear this, Costas. We traveled to Kea in 2007 for one of her cooking sessions and it was magical. Aglaia introduced us to a wonderful spectrum of Greek cuisine. While eating a gourmet picnic (including a rice and leftover fish salad from the previous night’s dinner) on a lovely beach my husband remarked, “You didn’t tell me we were bringing me to paradise!” We have so many good memories of your kitchen, garden, patio and basement with the blocks of feta cheese in a barrel. Above all, Aglaia’s sunny and caring hospitality. She is forever in my heart.
My deepest condolences to you, dear Costas on the loss of your beloveds, Aglaia and Neva 💔. And, thank you for the memories of your kind hospitality when I visited Kea in 2016 and 2017 🙏
This is such sad news. Substack introduced me only recently to Aglaia so a latecomer to her amazing food writing and cooking skills. So very sorry for your loss Costas.
Love and thoughts, Costa - so good to hear these memories. Much looking forward to remembering your beloved Aglaia with you at this year’s Oxford Symposium along with so many of us who knew and valued her.
I am so sorry to read the sad news about Aglaia. Thank you for sharing such beautiful remembrances here. I had the pleasure of designing her cookbook, Mediterranean Vegetarian Feasts, many years ago and since then had always dreamed of one day visiting her magical world on Kea. Sending my condolences to her beloved family & friends, and many fans.
Val and I are so sad to hear of Aglaia’s passing. I just read your newsletter to Val and we are touched by your words. We fondly remember our visit with you and cooking with Aglaia at your school. If you decide to travel and wish to come to Maine, we will cook for you and give you a tour of our beautiful part of the world. Fondly, Jill Strauss
My sincerest condolence. I have loved Aglaia for so many years, and I felt something was not right. She was such a fantastic author with a style like no one else. She will be missed, and indeed, she has been missed lately.
May her memory always be a blessing. I hope the best for you, Costas. Thank you so much for sharing, and I hope you will find the inspiration to post again as memories return and recipes are found. It will always be nice to hear from you. Please leave her internest posts and blogs so that people can continue to enjoy them as a memorial to her. They are all wonderful and a testament to her unique way of being. -God bless!
oooh, Costas! It is so sad to hear this news. I always looked forward to meeting Aglaia at the Oxford Food Symposium. Her deep knowledge, her eagerness to share that knowledge, and her collaborative way of working with everyone was a joy to behold and experience. She will be missed, worldwide, but especially on your island.
